Built on the Teneo® Platform, Shell’s digital employees ‘Emma’ and ‘Ethan’ help and advise customers on the technical aspects of Shell’s lubricant products. Teneo’s unique Master-Local feature has allowed Shell to use the original structure and knowledge that powers its digital employees, including integration into other systems, to enable new languages to be added quickly with minimal effort.

Initially launched in the UK and US markets, digital employees Emma and Ethan know the details of over 3000 Shell products and understand over 16,500 different characteristics of these products, providing customers with a wide range of answers to queries and relevant technical information such as product pack availability, physical property details including density or flash points, and product performance benefits.
The Teneo Language Resources are at the heart of Teneo’s ability to make natural language applications truly multi-lingual—fast. Developed over the last fifteen years, using millions of real-life dialogs, machine learning, statistical tools and sophisticated algorithms, they also make handling non-Latin based languages such as Chinese and Russian easier.
